Veggie Students in Canada

These pictures are taken from a Vegetarian food outlet in the University of Guelph in Canada. It brings me hope to see that more and more mainstream educational establishments are willing to put in money and energy into feeding their students. Not that I'm tired of the "Fresher's Fifteen" and students smelling of pizza and beef flavoured pot noodles, but it's always nice with a little change.

Parents Accused Of Killing Their Baby With Veganism

I read a very sad thing today which was published on several blogs and news sites online. The following extract is from the news site Breitbart:

"Two vegans who fed their 11-month-old daughter only mother's milk
went on trial in northern France on Tuesday charged with neglect after their baby died suffering from vitamin deficiency.
The ambulance workers called the police because the child was pale and thin, weighing 5.7 kilos (12.5 pounds) compared to an average eight kilos for her age.
The baby had only been fed on the milk of her mother, who was aged 37 at the time.An autopsy showed that Louise was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency which experts say increases a child's sensitivity to infection and can be due to an unbalanced diet.
"The problem of vitamin B12 deficiency could be linked to the mother's diet," said Anne-Laure Sandretto, deputy prosecutor in the city of Amiens where the trial is taking place. The couple has been charged with "neglect or food deprivation followed by death" and face up to 30 years in prison if convicted."

Now loads of people on online forums have cried out that they think feeding your baby a vegan diet is equal to murdering him or her. People, let's get one thing straight: Kids in Europe and America do not usually suffer from starvation - it is the other way around. Kids here suffer from diabetes and teenage heart attacks. My fear is that this article will infuse some kind of false notion in people that eating a healthy vegan diet based on vegetables, grains and nuts is dangerous. Which it's not. The mom was clearly not eating a proper vegan diet since she was deficient in such vital vitamins and it is horrible that her baby had to die from not being properly fed due to the parents lack of knowledge. However, a vegan diet is not dangerous. It is far more dangerous to consume Big Mac's, french fries and greasy Bacon sandwiches. That will kill more kids than carrots and cashew nuts ever will.

Let Them Eat Cake

Remember when dinosaurs used to walk the earth? Remember when we used to actually bake cakes? Well, those golden days are gone. This TV chef starts of her show by saying that she is going to make a cake. For Kwanzaa.

All she does is cutting up a ready made sponge, putting some ready made icing on it, and sprinkles it with popcorn. Yes, seriously.

This is a cooking show. Aired in America. Why am I not surprised?

Louie's Male Contraception

One man, two testicles, a sexually active life, and a thirst for knowledge. Put them all together and what do you have? Why, Louie's Male Contraception of course -- one physician's project to use a heat method of male birth control and blog about the results. So, bookmark the site and follow this very interesting experiment.

Two things. First, I have to say that is one dedicated medblogger. Second, if an unintended pregnancy would not be acceptable to you don't try this at home, or, if you do make sure you double up; use a back-up method.

And now, sit back, relax, look forward to the slides, and let's see what we can all learn from this.

Bacon Ice Cream

American fast food chains never cease to surprise me. Denny's, the burger joint who is now hosting "Baconalia", a festival with seven bacon-laden dishes, created to promote heart attacks and high cholesterol, is now introducing their most stomach turning dish: the Maple Bacon Sundae.

That's right kids. Flavoured syrup and vanilla ice cream sprinkled with diced hickory-smoked bacon. Because I mean it's not enough to let little piggies die for our mains, they also have to die for our desserts now. Enjoy.

Hoummus Heaven

I bought a neat mixer three days ago and I've been making hoummus like its creamy gold ever since. Below is my favorite Hoummus recipe:

Organic Tahini
Organic Chickpeas
Half an avocado
Lemonjuice
Sea salt

Blend it. Dip some carrots in it. Cry out of joy. Simples.

Freestyle Machine

As if we don't have enough sodas. CocaCola has invented a soda machine where you can choose from 106 different flavours. The touch screen gives you flavour choices such as "Death of the taste buds" or "Water is for sissys". Yum.

VeggieVision's New Reporter!

It's been very quiet lately, I know, I know. But when you're moving from country to country, things can get a little hectic and unorganised and suddenly you're sitting in front of your computer and think nahh, let me watch some Jersey Shore instead and deal with the blog later. As in like three weeks later.

But no more of that (for now). I have some exciting news for ya'll! I will soon start filming some episodes for the online based TV-portal called VeggieVisionTV, a channel based on vegetarian and vegan cookery, education, information and interviews.

I will start of by visiting a very interesting vegetarian bakery in Stockholm which is owned by monks who want to promote a better world with their cruel-free pastries. I can't wait! Take Care!

When You Want To Spoil Someone

Why not offer them the one you love some potted meat? Now, you might think this is your regular squashed bodies into a can but no: mechanically separated chicken, beef tripe, partially defatted cooked beef fatty tissue, beef hearts, water, partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue, salt, mustard, natural flavorings, dried garlic, dextrose, sodium erythorbate, and sodium nitrite are the ingredients. My mouth is already watering.

Yummie.

For The Love Of Blog, Please Get Your Freak On

Today my sweet beloved dad gave me a strange look in the kitchen while I was preparing my lunch.
"Since you've gone vegan you spend a lot of time in the kitchen" he said.
"Sure" I said.
"It requires an awful lot of preparation" he continued. I didn't say anything.
"It's all a bit too much no?" he persisted. Oh, sweet beautiful dad. He should not have said that. Out came the background to this post which he was forced to listen to while I ambitiously peeled my cucumber. And now it's your turn amigos.

Since when have we humans stopped viewing food as something which has to be gathered and carefully prepared before we can put it into our bodies? We have begun assuming that food is something which is easily obtained, preferably with a cooking time under 2 minutes in the microwave. We think nothing of complete meals wrapped up in plastic boxes or soups in a plastic cup along with store-bought bread and canned fruit. Freezed fish sticks or burgers and ready-made salads in plastic bags are the norm today. We don't prepare food, we don't even cook it. God forbid you should actually make something from scratch and miss this week episode of Gossip Girl while you're slaving with chopping up some salad.

And you know what the saddest part is? NOBODY IS QUESTIONING IT. Do you know what we question though? We question weird freaky people who actually bake their own bread, grow their own tomatoes, press their own juices or cook their own stews from scratch - those are the weirdos. The weirdos are the ones who don't consume pre-packed food or e-numbers. The weirdos are the ones who don't like cancer provoking pesticides on apples or aspartame in their drink. The weirdos are the ones who think that it's something fishy about instant kebab-flavoured noodles in a plastic cup which cooks under 2 minutes. Those are the weirdos.

Well you know what? I must be a freak of nature then.

Food Matters

A film which everybody should watch.

Murderer - Heart Attack Grill

Blair River, the 575 pound spokesperson for the fast food chain 'Heart Attack Grill' pictured on the image below, has died at the tender age of 29. River used to participate in ads for the grill and promote their 8000 calorie meals.

The death of the Heart Attack Grill spokesperson puts their disgusting ads in a different new light, doesn't it? Some things should just be banned, America.

As If One Isn't Enough...

French/Belgian fast food chain Quick has launched its new 2 in 1 hamburger. Of course.

It's Confirmed: Sarah Palin is a Froot Loop

I like Jamie Oliver. Not only because he cries about American's eating themselves to death, but also because he called Sarah Palin a "Froot Loop" according to AP News. Go Jamie, you sassy brit!

Jamie criticized Mrs. Froot Loop's approach to the food habits of school children in America since she and other conservatist openly opposed the Obama Administration's healthy eating initiatives. According to the Froot Loop and her entourage, "telling children what to eat is government meddling"and "parents should decide what their children should eat".

Not only does this statement smell like the old fear of communism with the love for American cheesecake but also of pure ignorance.

By now, I think we can all agree on that no, most parents in America don't know how to feed their children. Why do I say that? Uhm, maybe because one in three American kids are obese? Maybe because Spaghetti Tacos is a favorite amongst American children? Or maybe because one in three American adults are obese as well?

Dear Mrs. Froot Loop, just give it up. America's children will not start saluting Mao and call each other comrade just because of some governmental guidelines on healthy eating. I mean who knows, they might start breathing normally again and be able to walk up the stairs like ordinary children.
